This event took place on April 22, 2014 at the California Historical Society in partnership with San Francisco Heritage. This panel discussion explored the continued impact of the visionary Panama-Pacific International Exposition architects, including Bernard Maybeck and Willis Polk. The panelists address the questions: can their ideals and vision still be seen today? What is the relevancy of their extant work in today’s context and the lessons we can take from that? How do the challenges of then and now compare? How do we look at public space differently for audiences today? John King, San Francisco Chronicle urban design critic, moderates this discussion. He is joined by Hans Baldauf of BCV Architects, Marc L’Italien of EHDD, and Jay Turnbull of Page Turnbull.

Of course while this sounds simple enough there are a huge range of different options available to you in order to create a green home built according to green and conservation standards. Furthermore different home owners lie at different places along the scale. For some it has to be built from the ground up, using renewable building techniques and environmentally-friendly materials. They need to be insulated to within an inch of their lives, have rooftops and are powered entirely from renewable energy in the form of solar power, air source heat pumps, wind turbines and the like. They have composting toilets and collect rain water to bathe in, are triple-glazed and are designed to make the best use of the available natural light. For most people though, however interesting a concept this may be, it is a step further than is practical. Most people who care about the environment already own a home and rather than wanting to move completely into custom-designed home and possibly even self-built home, they want to do their best to turn their existing property into an energy efficient comfortable living spaces. Fortunately there are lots of things you can do right now and for very little money to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of your new or existing house without you having to give up on your home comforts. Panama city tours 2016, Panama city tourism & Vacations 2016, Panama city trip 2016 Travel Videos HD, World Travel Guide http://www.youtube.com/subscription_c... Panama City is a very multicultural place, with large populations from many different parts of the world. Spanish is spoken by most, and many speak some form of English. Customer service is slowly improving, and surprisingly dismal in hotels. However, on the streets Panamanians are for the most part extremely friendly and helpful and would love to give you some advice. There's great shopping, from high-end stores in the malls around Paitilla and in the banking district around Via Espana, to veritable bargains around La Central (Central Avenue, now turned into a pedestrian walkway) and the Los Pueblos outdoor mall. You can find many ethnic stores (mostly Chinese and Indian), in certain parts of the City. See in Panama city =============== Panama Canal, An absolute must if you're in Panama City. The easiest and cheapest way is to go to the Miraflores locks, watch the huge boats go by and visit its very modern and informative visitor's center with a museum, a movie theater and a fancy restaurant (USD25 for the lunch buffet). A one way cab to Miraflores locks should cost around 6 USD. By metrobus from Albrock, every hour, for $0.25, from 6:00am to 5:00pm. Last bus leaves Miraflores at 5:00pm.You can also take a luxury train along the canal to Colón, or obviously take a boat! Prices Miraflores locks and museum: adults $15, students $10. Casco Viejo is the historic part of town, where you will find many colonial style government buildings, cathedrals and museums including a Canal Museum. It is currently under massive renovation, with crumbling shacks next to beautifully restored colonial buildings. There are a number of accommodation options in Casco ranging from hostel pricing up to very expensive colonial suites. The area hosts a large number of eclectic events ranging from operas and musicals at the national theatre to block parties and fashion catwalks in the open plazas. Casco Viejo also offers some of the finest dining options in Panama City. Panama Viejo The site of the ruins of the original city of Panama that was sacked by the pirate Henry Morgan in the 1600s. The city was later moved to Casco Viejo. Today Panama Viejo is home to one of Panama's national parks with the buildings left in unrestored states. It is well worth the visit but read the safety warnings and ask park employees about where it is safe to visit as the park is surrounded outside by one of the city's dangerous areas. Amador Causeway. The Amador Causeway connects the three islands to the mainland. From the causeway, there is a lovely view of Panama City, and the Puente de las Americas. Many Panamanians like to spend their weekends jogging, riding a bicycle or roller-blading down the causeway, or having a meal or drinks in one of the many restaurants and bars on the islands. Bikes are available to rent in many different varieties including recumbents and multi-person bicycles, starting at about $3.50 per hour. From the causeway you can also arrange day trips by ferry to one of the surrounding islands with boats leaving early in the morning. Mi Pueblitos. The pretty deserted museum (entrance free) on the slopes of Cerro Ancon showcases the different ethnicities of Panama. There are several artisans producing curios. The outdoor museum is close in proximity to El Chorrillo so be very careful about straying outside of boundaries or into unsupervised areas. Upon last visit it was not recommended to climb Cerro Ancon. Biomuseo (Biodiversity Museum: Panama Bridge of Life), Building 136, Amador Causeway Apartado 0843-02931, Panama, 830 - 6700, The Biodiversity Museum: Panama Bridge of Life (also known as Biomuseo) is located on the Amador Causeway in Panama City, Panama. It was designed by renowned architect Frank Gehry. This is Gehry's first design for Latin America. Do in Panama city ============= Aerial View of the Canal, Skydive, etc., The Canal itself is best seen via an aerial view through the local operator and is the central marvel and spectacle of Panama city. Even stunt and trick flights with veteran air force pilots and skydives are available over the marvel of engineering, to appreciate the entire scale of and ambition behind it.

An awe-inspiring engineering feat, Dubai Palm Islands is definitely the largest artificial islands on earth. These Islands are three man made islands in the form of massive palm trees connected to the beaches of Dubai. The first island is the Palm Jumeirah, Jebel Ali Palm second and the third is the Palm Deira which is the biggest of them all. This artificial archipelago located off the coastline of United Arab Emirates in Persian Gulf. Dubai islands project was commissioned by Sheikh Mohammed in an effort to maximize beachfront property. Dubai's palm tree-shaped resort island on land built from the sea will contribute 120 km of beaches. Aside from the construction of the ambitious expansion, there is also the problem of constructing a mini city, which consists of 4,500 high-end residential homes, miles of roads, luxurious hotels and many amenities that will require basic human resources including electricity, safe drinking water and many more. This enormous project will position Dubai as one of the top tourist destinations in the world. I will tell you why these islands have appeared and that they must satisfy. Dubai is an emirate that open sea about 50 km (an estimate) and the sites required for building projects are on the beach. To view course and especially to "park" in front of the yacht's property or even assembly. Well when the beach was not available, and demand persists, the beach had invented. And it appeared artificial islands. Hence so sophisticated forms of the islands: they had to provide a larger opening to the ocean. This new concept quickly caught on. 'Only a' product 'high-end, the latest wrinkle in the most creative developers metropolis. A new source of land, location of the trick of the planet Earth! The job went, the two islands were settled immediately, with mixed development, spectacular, exorbitant, and finally in Dubai's specific style ... In parallel to the World archipelago started building and other projects are still on the drawing board Nakheel, developer. But crisis compels us to winter a little ... Where is the dream of similar islands: In Lebanon, wants to build a cedar shaped islands, the symbol of this country. Russia wants to try an island / an archipelago in Black in Sochi at the 2014 Olympics, at least that is speaking through the past years. Also in Japan there are several large airports built on artificial islands. The Palm Islands are artificial peninsulas constructed of sand dredged from the bottom of the Persian Gulf by the Belgian company Jan De Nul and the Dutch company Van Oord. The sand is sprayed by the dredging ships, which are guided by DGPS, onto the required area in a process known as rain-bowing because of the arcs in the air when the sand is sprayed. The outer edge of each Palm's encircling crescent is a large rock breakwater. The breakwater of the Palm Jumeirah has over seven million tons of rock. The Palm Islands are an artificial archipelago (islands) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Major commercial and residential infrastructures will be constructed by Nakheel Properties, a property developer in The UAE. The Belgian and Dutch dredging and marine contractors, Jan De Nul and Van Oord, some of the world's specialists in land reclamation, were hired to complete construction. The islands are the Palm Jumeirah, the Palm Jebel Ali and the Palm Deira. Each settlement will be in the shape of a palm tree, topped with a crescent. The settlements will have a large number of residential, leisure and entertainment centers. The Palm Islands are located off the coast of The UAE in the Persian Gulf and will add 520 kilometers of beaches to the city of Dubai. The first two islands will comprise of approximately 100 million cubic meters of rock and sand. The Palm Deira will be composed of approximately one billion cubic meters of rock and sand. All materials will be quarried in The UAE. Among the three islands, there will be over 100 luxury hotels, exclusive residential beach side villas and apartments, marinas, water theme parks, restaurants, shopping malls, sports facilities and health spas. The creation of the Palm Jumeirah began in June 2001. Shortly after, the Palm Jebel Ali was announced and reclamation work began. The Palm Deira is planned to have a surface area of 46.35 square kilometers and was announced for development in October 2004. GC Privé ~ A world of luxury www.gcprive.com

Strap in for a high-speed deep dive into JVM features now on the drawing board, which will benefit Java and all other languages that run on the JVM. Project Panama is building new modes of interconnection with native C and C++ APIs, including direct up-calls, down-calls, direct coding of vectorized loops, and access to structured off-heap data. Project Valhalla will naturalize flat, pointer-free data types to the JVM heap, giving JVM programmers the ability to define new classes with the flexibility of Java objects or C++ templates, and the efficiency of C or assembly code. Meanwhile, in the engine room, Project Metropolis is contemplating "Java on Java", the promise of a reboot of JVM technology using a modern code generator, Graal, which can be easily ported to new platforms and adapted to new workloads. All of this is happening in real time, in the OpenJDK. The combined result will be a JVM which will be the best platform to code the systems of the future, on the hardware of the future, for all of us coders of the future. Lead or guide for Project Panama (native interconnect), the Da Vinci Machine Project (JVM futures), Project Valhalla (polymorphism and value types), Arrays 2.0, Metropolis (Java-on-Java RI), JVM security. Has worked on Java technology at Sun then Oracle since 1995, contributing widely to functionality and performance of the Sun/JDK stack, touching everything from hardware architecture to code generators to libraries to programming languages. Past projects include JVM invokedynamic, Java inner classes, Pack200 (archive format), the initial port of HotSpot (to SPARC), the Unsafe API, and various dynamic, parallel, and hybrid languages, including Common Lisp, Scheme (“esh”), dynamic bindings for C++.

KSI Global Mentoring Programme Launch - Rafael Vinoly On the 18th and 19th February 2014, KSI launched the KSI Global Mentoring Programme with the visit of world-class architect Rafael Vinoly at our Latin American schools. Rafael conducted educational workshops and gave talks to our school community at both KSI Panama and KSI Bogota. Rafael worked with students to introduce them to architectural concepts, his work, and how architecture has impacted societies over time. Rafael was introduced to the broader KSI community through the Community Connection event where an early evening Talk was hosted with the KSI School, for KSI parents, teachers, members of the relevant professional communities and VIPs. The KSI Global Mentoring Programme is exclusive to our family of schools and available only to KSI students aged 14 -- 18. The Programme has been conceived to bring world-class minds and role-models within the reach of the KSI family and local community. The programme aims to inspire young people and give them exemplars to aspire to. Gloria Lorza, Director of KSI Bogota said, "The KSI Global Mentoring Programme has the ability to change the lives of our high school students for the better. Inspiring them to develop 21st century skills that are essential for future success and helping them become true Global Citizens."

We share adventures, that's what we do, and this hike is by far the best one we've done since Alaska! Get all the Details of our trip here: http://gonewiththewynns.com/volcan-baru-panama Join our crew on Patreon and become a BIGGER part of the adventure: http://bit.ly/patreon-wynn This is a hike that we tried to talk ourselves out of many times: "It's rainy, we don't have a warm enough coat, there's no guarantee that we'll even get to see the sunrise, etc. etc." I guess that's what makes it so sweet in the end. We set off on an adventure with ZERO guaruntees but (this time) it was 100% worth it. Its our last adventure in Boquete before we drop off the rental car and return to sea level. So grab your warm beverage (or a boozy one), throw on your best jacket and join us on a hike to the highest point in Panama, on top of a volcano and WAY above the clouds. - Jason and Nikki (and the crew too) Enjoy our vids?
